To a special woman in my life…
Every child (no matter how old you are, you’re always your mum’s child!) has a fond memory of their mum. I recall back when I was in 2nd Grade, my mum always drove us kids to school every day, we didn’t live no less than 1/4 mile from our school, but my mum always dropped us off at school. This one day, I was sad about not having a “Show & Tell” item, each week we had to bring in something to share with our friends; this particular day, I just forgot to take something, but I didn’t realize it until I sat at my desk and watched all the other kids get excited about their stuff. It wasn’t more than 5 minutes later, there was a knock at the classroom door, I recall it didn’t get my attention, until Miss Potter, yes, my teachers name was Miss Potter! She called out my name “Vinko,” I looked up and there she was… my mum! She was holding a wooden sail boat that I had wanted to share with my friends. The biggest smile came across my face, the feeling of sadness disappeared and my day was looking better again. That’s what mum’s do… they’re always there for you when you need them!
It’s funny, being a parent, especially a single dad; our mum’s are important figures in our lives, especially for the boys! I have daddy’s little princess – Annabella; but Tyler has a very special woman in his life too… his mom Kerry. Even though we are divorced, I try to make the transition, for all of us, a little like the old times. This is my weekend with the kids, but it is also Mothers Day. I agreed with the kids’ mom that they have a special breakfast together this morning. The kids were so excited to show their mom gifts and home-made cards (with a little help from Dad). As soon as the door bell rang, the kids ran to the door and there she was… Mom! It was a precious moment to be watch from the sidelines, seeing the kids faces light up, seeing their mom smile at her two children showering her with gifts and love. That’s what today is about, not selfish reasons to deny the children their mom, but to encourage the love and relationship with the other parent; even though we aren’t together anymore, we still are a family… just a family apart.
I called mum back in Australia today to wish her a happy Mothers Day. She was so excited to speak with the kids and hear their voices. My mum was just here a few weeks back, and we all had a great time. I miss my mum! Yes, even the toughest guys are “mamma’s boys.” I have many fond memories of my mum, many good ones, a couple not so good, but we all know that’s life! My mum will always be a special woman in my life!
Well the kids should be back from breakfast with their mom soon. And we are off to church this afternoon and then going to a Graduation Party for Lauren this evening. I’m the cook for the event (yes, people are finding out I can cook too!)
Here is a special scripture reading for today – “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” – Exodus 20:12
Thank God for magnificent Mothers! Thank God for the impact of godly mothers in [our] children’s lives.
Have a special day moms!
