Each night this week 5/4 – 5/7, I am a guest speaker at the Azusa Pacific University – Soul Quest event in the High Desert. Part of my role as Director of CIA is to promote the initiative, recruit volunteers and raise much needed funds to keep the program running.
CIA is an amazing opportunity for me. I am finally in my niche! I’m serving my community in a great way to give back in service, and really appreciate the many people we encounter everyday, whether it’s at the gym, the Starbucks, the grocery store or even in your neighborhood. We all have needs, but sometimes our pride prevents us from seeking help when we need it. I’m guilty of that!
I recently read a story about – The Curse of the Capable. It reads: ” But I think I know what went wrong, [we] are too strong. We’re the people who help, we support, we nurture when we know someone’s in need, we try to assist them. And we rarely let on that we have needs of our own.
This is the curse of the capable. Those of us considered dependable, stable, and strong tend to present such a good show that no-one can see when we actually need help. Admitting need is difficult, especially for those of us who work hard to meet others’ needs. But being strong doesn’t mean never needing anything. These aren’t sins. They aren’t personality flaws. They aren’t signs of failure.
“I mean that I want us to help each other with the faith we have. Your faith will help me, and my faith will help you.” - Romans 1:12
I’m slowly learning God created us to love, not to impress, each other. And I do my family and friends a disservice when I don’t let them show me the love I try to give them. So I’ve started asking for help I need rather than secretly hope someone will read my mind in times of stress.”
I’m finding good friends rarely let me down these days!
Have a blessed day!
Vince
